RPD’s Managing Director Conquers the Ironman for a Great Cause

Recently, our Managing Director, Matthew Tyson, took on an extraordinary personal challenge, completing the Ironman Barcelona 2025 to support our Charity of the Year, Home-Start UK Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex.

The event saw 2,607 competitors from 102 countries take on a gruelling 3.8km swim in the Mediterranean, a 180km cycle through the Catalonian countryside, and a 42km marathon along the Spanish coast, all within a 16-hour 20-minute cut-off time.

Matthew crossed the finish line in an incredible 13 hours, 54 minutes, and 37 seconds, impressively raising over £5,000 for Home-Start CHAMS in the process.

He was quick to credit those who supported him throughout his journey:

“It’s a bit like being an F1 driver. While the driver takes the plaudits, there’s an entire team behind them who make it all possible. Whether you cycled with me on long rides, lent me your garden for aid station practice, helped with bike mechanics, or simply offered words of encouragement, it all played a massive part.”

Matthew also expressed special thanks to his Triathlon Coach, Brian Tilley, the Crawley Tri Club, and, most importantly, his wife, whose unwavering support made the achievement possible.

For those interested in the finer details:

  • Swim (3.8km): 1 hr 20 mins 6 secs
  • Transition 1: 18 mins 5 secs
  • Bike (180km): 6 hrs 44 mins 51 secs
  • Transition 2: 15 mins 20 secs
  • Run (42km): 5 hrs 18 mins 9 secs
  • Total Time: 13 hrs 54 mins 37 secs
  • Calories Burned: 7,454
  • Estimated Sweat Loss: 20 litres
  • Bananas Eaten: 8

Reflecting on the experience, Matthew said:

“The Ironman was the toughest challenge I’ve ever attempted, not just physically but mentally. But when you see the struggles on a day-to-day basis that many families have to cope with, it’s just so wonderful to try and help make a difference.”

The funds raised will help support Home-Start Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex, a charity providing vital emotional and practical support to families with young children. Their volunteers work alongside parents who may be facing mental health struggles, bereavement, financial pressures, or isolation, helping to ensure no family has to face hardship alone.

This challenge is a testament not only to Matthew’s determination but also to RPD’s ongoing commitment to supporting the communities we serve. Through the RPD Foundation, we’re proud to contribute to causes that make a real difference to local families and lives.
